Not being a radio one listener I only just came across this via Dave walker over on the Church Times Blog but it’s great, Chris Moyles talking about Church!
Although I have not followed closely for the last few years (largely as time has just not allowed so much) I used to be an avid follower of the (as was then) Lombard RAC Rally, the British leg of the world Rally series. During that time there were two main drivers I used to follow Malcolm Wilson, now director for the BP-Ford world Rally Team. The other Driver was Collin McRae who died this weekend in a helicopter accident. McRae was always fun to watch, he would drive his car right to the limits, which often meant sometimes past the limits often causing spectacular rolls and crashes which if at all possible caused nothing more that a slight delay although did of course sometimes mean the end of that particular rally. He became the first British world rally champion in 95 as well as the youngest ever world rally champion. In his interviews he always had a very likeable character and good sense of humour. Although retired from his rally career he is a great loss to both British and World motor sport. The helicopter that he was piloting crashed on Saturday afternoon and Colin, his 5 year old son Johny, Johny’s friend Ben aged 6 and family Friend Graeme all died. The families are in my thoughts and prayers at this time, to read more about Colin and the events of this weekend please click on the links below, the last one gives opportunity to leave tribute if you were a fan.

Last night I was taking the youth club bowling, about half way down the road a warning light comes on on the dash board and the engine cuts out. Pull over to side (on busy single carriageway A road) and try to restart it, no joy. I had to call out the breakdown service, we managed to get the young people onto bowling with my other leader and the help of her father who lived locally and some of them then had to get a taxi home. So I was towed home after a roadside repair was clearly not going to happen. This morning I booked the car into local main dealer and arranged to get the car towed into them. They were going to look at it on Monday, I am of course beginning to think this looks like an expensive problem. I just got a call from the garage they had some time and managed to have a look this afternoon, the car started first time no problems, the diagnostic machine says there is nothing wrong, so nothing has been done to a car that just died completely and now it is better? The garage are going to keep it in over the weekend and have a further look on Monday but at the moment all are scratching our heads. My biggest worry is that they don’t find anything, I get it back and it happened again. Thankfully we have some good friends who have lent us a car, and one that is beg enough to get us all in so at least we can still do all the things we were planning over the weekend. Tomorrow we are going over to some friends who live just outside Fairford where there is an air show on tomorrow so we will get to see all the red arrows etc, have a great time with friends and not have to pay £30 per head so tat will be good.
Have a good weekend and I shall try and sort out the rest of the talk from YB next week.
A busy but good Saturday, spent at the home of the above mentioned and that part ended with complaints about my last couple of posts not being interesting enough to her, I personally feel the complaint is a bit rich coming from someone who hasn’t posted for almost a month and that last post being the only one for almost 3 months! (Time to talk)
So anyway back to the point, it was actually my mother In-laws birthday on Saturday (along with my brothers and the Queen’s (well one of her’s anyway)) Happy Birthday one and all. So we went over to send the day with family, it was a really good day however I did learn one very important lesson. Having had a normal breakfast before leaving we then had a good cooked lunch (sausage and mash, which yes Marion did make a nice change from the chicken casserole or pizza). We then had a Birthday tea, with sarnies, followed by very nice fruit scones with fresh strawberries and cream and then birthday cake. All in all a good food day. However once returning home we had been invited out to a local restaurant run by some friends for a hog roast and me being me I can’t turn down a hog roast, this again more fantastic food. The lesson learnt? 4 meals in one day while nice you pay for it later! But hey it was good!
Back at work after 2 days off sick, now that’s not what I hate, although no I don’t like being ill obviously, it’s the fact that because I was ill I had to let people down. Now there was nothing I could do about it, it was one of those things where you can’t afford to go to far away from certain facilities and getting in the car would certainly have caused that to happen. But Sunday morning I was supposed to be leading and preaching at the Methodist church in one of our local villages and I was really looking forward to it, then I had to call them Sunday morning as I was not in a fit state to leave the house. I hope I will be able to re-arrange and join them again soon.
Last week was a silly week hence not much happening here, I hope to write a bit more this week, including some of the stuff I wanted to write about last week but just didn’t have the time to.
I don’t know about you but I do quite a lot of Desk Top Publishing (DTP) flyers, invites, programmes, magazine articles etc. and despite never having liked the programme I generally use MS Publisher, this is for 2 reasons:- 1. I have it (it comes as part of the MS office Pro suite) 2. lots of people I have to exchange documents with also have it. One last reason for using it is because most of the decent alternatives are prohibitively expensive, or at least they have been until now but you’ll have to be quick. Quark express is a professional DTP package, up until a few years ago it was pretty much the only package used by the industry for newspapers & magazines etc. (although Adobe InDesign is now also very popular) Quark is currently up to version 7 but you can get version 5 on the cover of Computer Shopper this month for just £3.50 (CD version). If you want a powerful DTP package at a good price I cannot recommend this highly enough.
I should give Credit to Martin Lewis the money saving expert for this, his site is also well worth a look if you haven’t come across it before and his weekly emails can be useful if you like a bargain!
Yesterday I was sitting having lunch with my wife and 2 of our children, plus another friend and her 2 children, in a local (Very Nice!) coffee shop (The Sadlers, if your ever dropping by I’ll let you take me there for lunch any time!). Anyway Faringdon is a small Market town (population about 6,000) about 15 miles outside of Oxford and on the edge of the Cotswolds. Whilst years ago it was on the main route from East to West England and hence has a lot of watering holes and old inns it is not somewhere that you would just pass through (although this is a shame as it is a really nice place). Anyway as I sat there having just finished a fantastic freshly made Bacon, Lettuce and Sun dried tomato Baguette and awaiting a superb slice of Carrot Cake I saw a couple of faces I recognised looking at the menu in the window. Now of course being a small town and especially with my work in the town it’s perhaps not surprising I know a lot of people around here, but these faces didn’t fit in, it was indeed the Famous Little Alice and Steve Price (who for those of you who don’t know either of them live in Croydon). I only managed a brief chat but it was great to see them and talk for a few minutes. If you read this I hope you had a good break and enjoyed the town.

I started this blog back in February 2005, almost 2 years ago writing has been sporadic, comments have been rare (apart from entries referring to Fat and Frantic which are still getting hits and comments including now from two ex band members!) but today I have for the first time been spamed (fortunately it was on an old post so I doubt anyone would have found it plus it has been dealt with quite quickly!), needless to say it has been deleted (if you are after somewhere to get a good deal on certain prescription drug types I’m sorry you have come to the wrong place) for this reason it is time to turn on the security things to stop this sort of behaviour, it’s a shame because I personally don’t like them, largely because as a dyslexic I can actually find it quite difficult to work out what the letters and numbers are some times and it can take several attempts to get it right, so I’m sorry to have to do this but I can’t have SPAM!
A quick update, thought I should let you know the meeting on Friday went really well, we have a lot of work to do and I don’t want to publish too many details at the moment as everything is in very early stages. But I will say thanks for your thoughts and prayers and please continue, I will let you know anything else that happens as we progress things.
I have a prayer request. About 2 or three months ago and friend and myself had a vision for a new web site, we did some thinking and came up with some ideas and phoned round a few people to ask for their thoughts and if they would consider writing for us. At this point it all went crazy as a result we have a meeting tomorrow morning with the Bible Society and the Evangelical Alliance about how we take it forward and possibly working with them (or whatever the outcome is tomorrow). It’s all very exciting and a little scary at the same time, we don’t really understand why God would entrust us as 2 fairly insignificant Christian people with such a huge task but at the same time feeling very honoured. Anyway it’s fairly important and we are not really sure what will happen but we are looking forward to it, please pray for us and I will update you later. Thanks.
